1Merrell Moab 2 Mid Ventilator Overview

The Merrell Moab 2 Mid Ventilator is a day hiking boot that provides comfort – even on rocks, durability, accurate sizing, and breathability for casual warm and dry-weather hiking challenge.

It’s a lightweight hiking boot that comes in a wide version. Below we break down the Merrell Moab 2 Mid Ventilator’s comfort, traction, breathability, waterproofing, fit, sizing and more.

2Comfort, Fit and Sizing

In terms of comfort, this boot has a well-padded ankle collar that provides good support for hauling medium-sized packs. Besides, the sole is light and thin enough to allow for some flexibility and improve the grip, and to help the foot to bend freely. However, we would recommend replacing the insole by durable Super feet insole.

The Moab 2 Mid is known as true to size footwear; Merrell makes wide versions of each size. The tongue is padded substantially with closed-cell foam and the lacing system is simple, but there is only one pair of lacing hooks in addition to the eyelets, making it harder to lace these hiking boots with a customized fit.

3Weight, Durability and Stability

Even using mesh, lower density sole, and a molded nylon shank, the Moab 2 Mid weighs 4.8 lbs in size 11 US; heaviest than the Moab 2 Vent but lighter than the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX.

The Moab 2 Mid Vent could not satisfy in terms of durability and arch support as the soles were coming off after a few easy hikes and the mesh outer began to show wear after only days of use on rocky trails.

In terms of stability, the Moab 2 Mid gives a wider base to prevent ankle rolling and slippage. However, it does not have the robust structure founded on heavier hiking boots like Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX.

4Traction

Using the Vibram rubber sole TC5+, the Moab 2 Mid Vent has a smoother lug pattern. So, this boot is more effective on the sand and slick rock trails and less capable at hiking in trails including mud and snow.

5Waterproofing

In reality, The Moab 2 Ventilator Mid does not feature a waterproof liner of any type. So, The Moab 2 Mid is known by the lack of waterproofing, however it’s very breathable.

6Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Comfortable
  • Good fit
  • Very breathable
Cons:

  • Not waterproof
  • Not much ankle support
  • Not fashionable

7Conclusion

The Merrell Moab 2 Ventilator Mid is lightweight boot that represents a good option for hikers spending the majority of their hiking time in dry climates – where a waterproof lining is not required.
